There are two ways in which you can look up information on .eu domain names.
DAS stands for Domain Availability Service. A DAS query returns only the domain name status. No registration renewal date, nameserver, registration, technical or onsite contact data is shown. Statuses are returned in English only.
Two separate DAS services are available, one accessible to the public and one accessible to registrars only. Public DAS, available on das.eu, has a query limit of 120 queries/60 seconds. Registrar-only DAS, available on das.registry.eu, has a significantly higher query limit of 360 queries/60 seconds.
Both public and registrar-only DAS services run on port 4343. Both return three basic states. Registrars use DAS prior to registering a domain name to check its availability.
The command used is get 1.0 domainname, where domainname is the name being queried without the .eu extension. The following example shows the result returned on a lookup of the domain name “eurid”.

WHOIS is a web- and text-based protocol that allows users to access various top-level domain databases.
When compared to DAS, the WHOIS service provides more information on the domain name holder. Information on nameservers is also shown.
Web-based WHOIS returns results in html format and is available to everyone. The service has a query limit of 15 queries/60 seconds. and returns all possible domain name statuses. Registrars use web-based WHOIS to verify information about domain names not in their portfolios.
Access the web-based WHOIS service on www.whois.eu. Each domain name query has to be qualified by the entry of a Captcha code.
Two separate text-based WHOIS services are available, one accessible to the public and one accessible to registrars only.
Public WHOIS, available on whois.eu, has a query limit of 15 queries/60 seconds. Registar-only WHOIS, available on whois.registry.eu has a significantly higher query limit of 360 queries/60 seconds.
Both public and registrar-only text-based WHOIS services run on port 43. Both return one state only. If a queried domain name has not yet been registered, the status AVAILABLE is returned. In all other instances, no status is returned.
To access the text-based WHOIS service, use the command line whois domainname.eu, where domainname.eu is the name being queried with the .eu extension.
If possible, use of the text-based WHOIS service should be avoided as the same information is available from other services and you will be blocked for less time if you exceed their query limits.
